I took the bus the other day. It took us about an hour to get where we wanted to go. The sun was out that day so it was hot. When clouds cover the sky, it's freezing. When the sun is out, you start sweating. On most buses in PerĂº there is not maximum capacity. As long as people can shift themselves a little further back or a little closer together, more people will get on. We knew we would be on for awhile so we took the back corner seats. Buses in Lima don't waste any space. Leg room was a luxury only children and tiny old women could enjoy. I am neither of those. On that bus ride I saw parts of Lima that I had never seen before. I saw people I had never seen before and will never see again. All those people had lives, friends, stories. All these people are still living right now. I saw them for three seconds of their lives on this one day; the briefest of encounters. I have had an amazing privilege to travel around the world. In the past year I've met a great number of people from a great number of places. Some people I still talk to, some people I don't know if I'll ever see them again. Facebook says I have about 450 friends. If we round that up to 500 for some people I know who arn't on facebook and compare that to the world population, we come up with a very small number. Some people say that we can achieve world peace if we just understand each other and respect each other. I have trouble understanding the 500 people I know already. So I'm not sure that its ever going to happen. It seems like the more people I meet the more I realize how many people I don't know.
